It's under the lights that she came alive, became who she really was, and what she was meant to be. Better than Ella, some people said, better than Rosemary; this broad could sing. She could throw it out, bring it in and wrap it all around you in a couple of little notes. She sang to the crowd as if she loved each and every one of them, and in those moments, she did. Hourglass shape, flaming red hair. Tiny, cinched waist but as buxom as they come. She married a young Merchant Marine one day and moved into a tiny, but sunny apartment on Flatbush. When she was older, sitting on a back porch on a warm day, she'd let a verse soar, hit the most crystal of notes. "Oh, yes," she'd tell those who didn't already know. "I used to sing."
