There were all sorts of things a girl like her could do, if a girl wanted to do them. Work a counter, take dictation, teach the alphabet to someone else’s kids. She didn’t want any of that. A girl like her could do better, and she knew it. She wasn’t going to wear an apron or a name tag, brush chalk off of her hands and out of her hair every day.
