Ruby
Ruby
She was a stunner in her day.
Deep auburn hair, whipped cream complexion, red lips and those green eyes. She caught the eye of every man in town, and was the first crush for a whole mess of boys. She never had a beau that anyone knew of; whether she was just fussy or no man was brave enough to ask was anybody's guess. In small towns, everything is everybody's business, but you couldn't say one bad thing about her. She knew your order as soon as you sat at the counter, always had a nice smile and if you were having a bad day, she'd give you a wink. Or maybe a slice of coconut cream pie. She wasn't from town; she had just landed there. Most people murmur that strangers should just pass on through, but words like that were never said in her direction. Her novelty settled in with the known, with the usual. Nobody came to fetch her, and she never talked about her people or what brought her to that spot. It seemed like she had always been there. And then one day she wasn't. An empty place behind the counter, and when a new girl finally showed up in her uniform, she had to ask you what you wanted.
Nobody liked that.
