She had waist-length, slightly wavy light brown hair, always woven into a braid. She wore Justins in 5th grade for her school picture, and her favorite plaid shirt with pearlized snap buttons. She rarely smiled because of a slightly crooked eye tooth that I was jealous of, and she ran faster than any other girl on Field Day. Her life was Mariah, a brown American Quarter Horse with a shiny black mane. She rode Mariah in the Rodeo Days parade down Central Avenue in Phoenix, the only day she would wear a skirt and a perfectly white felt cowboy hat that cinched tightly under her chin.
